playing music to speakers & headphones

hopefull someone can help me here....

does anyone know why my phone wont play music via my amp?

using the supplied usb to 3.5mm adapter i can use my own headphones (thank god!) & also using a double ended 3.5 cable i can plug it into the AUX in on my car stereo (yay)

but when i plug the phone into my amp using the same method it wont play sound thru the external speakers - the sound comes from the phone speakers

does anyone know why this is?

would the problem be using the supplied 3.5 adapter also being the input for hands free?

would a usb-3.5 adapter (w/out the mic for handsfree) be the answer..?
